Description

from School of Rock
Based on the hit film, School of Rock follows Dewey Finn (Alex Brightman in what The Hollywood Reporter calls “a hilarious, star-making performance”). A failed, wannabe rock star, Dewey decides to earn a few extra bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight-A students into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. But can he get them to the Battle of the Bands without their parents and the school’s headmistress finding out? While teaching these pint-sized prodigies what it means to truly rock, Dewey falls for the school’s beautiful, but uptight headmistress, helping her rediscover the wild child within.

This high-octane smash delivers face-melting guitar riffs performed live by an incredibly talented cast of youngsters and touching romance in equally awesome doses! Featuring 14 new songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber and all the original songs from the movie, School of Rock is a full-throttle tribute to the power of music. The Huffington Post raves, “Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new musical blows the roof off the theater!” and Time Out New York cheers, “School’s in – FOREVER!”

“For those about to love School of Rock, we salute you!” (Time Out New York). This hit Broadway musical is a New York Times Critics’ Pick and “an inspiring jolt of energy, joy and mad skillz!” (Entertainment Weekly). Reuters raves ”Andrew Lloyd Webber has Broadway rocking!”

This show is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes (1 intermission). Recommended for ages 8 years and up.

From the perspective of having attended 50-100 Broadway shows over the past 15 years, this is in my bottom 10. Not one of the adult actors was exceptional -- fairly frequent disturbingly out of tune singing by both male and female leads; acting lacking credibility -- and both the script and the musical score were unimpressive, even boring. I would have left at intermission if the final 10 minutes of the first act had not been livelier than what came before. The kids, without exception however, were delightful -- cute, enthusiastic, and immensely talented -- both in solo parts and as a nicely balanced singing and dancing ensemble. Overall, I enjoyed the evening, but would not recommend this as an example of Broadway's finest.

We brought a group of 13 year old Girl Scouts to see School of Rock and hey loved it! Fun storyline, great acting and singing, especially by the supremely talented kids in this show. Wow - mind blown. The girls also loved waiting by the stage door for autographs and photos after the show. The cast was extremely friendly and accommodating which made the evening really special.

I was traveling with my niece who had just graduated high school and gave her a few options to choose from when it came to going to Broadway and admittedly I think I was a little disappointed she had chosen this...BUT in the end I was thrilled that she did! I LOVED IT! The energy throughout the show stayed high, the kids are stunningly talented, and the story telling was well executed. I would absolutely recommend this to any family visiting the city that wanted a easy fun night out.
