"Great location, tired and a bit grubby "

A hotel that could do with a refresh, grout missing from tiles and grubby carpets. Some of the complimentary boxes were empty - so not refreshed from previous guests, empty shower cap box, no ear buds in the other box. No ice or coffee making facilities. A promise that 2 diners nearby would give 15% off to residents for breakfast was met in both places with blank looks and a refusal to honour the promise. One said there was categorically no such deal in place. Great location for Times Square but tired and in need of a refresh.

Once arrived at the Hotel, I found that they had booked a room with a "petit bed" because they had that specific detail in the reservation file. The room was too small and the bed not large enough for my son (12) and myself. So I asked a different room explaining that I never asked for a petit bed. The hotel manager gave me a larger room, still very small, but with a larger bed. The room was acceptable, clean but really too small. After 7 days I checked out for a tour to Niagara falls reccomending to give me a similar room once back from the tour. When I checked in again to spend the last night in New York, the receptionist Lisa was very kind and gave me a room much better than the previous one saying that I had received an upgrade. She was very kind and helpful during my stay in New York and I appreciated a lot her behaviuor. Washington Jefferson hotel is located downtown, close to Times Square, in an old building and it's fine to stay there taking int consideration the prices to be paid for a room in the specific area.

"I REALLY wanted to love this hotel..."

Stayed for five days (over Labor Day). This hotel COULD be a great 3-star hotel. It is basic, and the front desk is incredibly friendly. The location is fantastic. Unfortunately, my room smelled musty due to lack of any ventilation. The mold on the insides of the shower door was disgusting, and the shower door was falling apart in the corner. My feet were getting black when walking on the carpet. I bought paper towels to lay out and walk on and wipe down bathroom in some areas...they got black. I'm back home from this trip and someone noted that all the items in my suitcase smelled bad. When I sniffed them, I realized that my stuff smelled like the hotel room. On the third morning of my stay, Sunday at 9am, the housekeeping staff decided to gossip loudly in the halls while cleaning rooms. I had my privacy sign on my door, so they were aware that someone could be in there, and yet they were gabbing on and on, even going so far as to call to each other loudly from different hallways. After desperately trying to get more sleep, by 10am I finally had to step out into the hall to politely ask them (in perfect Spanish) to lower their voices. (They were stunned...because they realized that I could not only hear, but understand what they were talking about perfectly...and it wasn't about housekeeping!). I don't mind the noise that comes with housekeeping staff doing their jobs, but being disturbed by hotel staff talking about ANYTHING loudly outside my door is unprofessional. By 10:30am it was clear I wasn't going to be able to sleep, so I gave up. I spoke to someone at the front desk, and the manager on duty noted that housekeeping would reach out to me. On the day I left I spoke to the same manager, and noted that (a)housekeeping never reached out to me (the incident was Sunday, and I left on Tuesday); and that (b) it was unlikely I would stay at this hotel again. The manager noted that he would make a note of it, and that perhaps an offer can be made for a future stay. I reiterated the fact that I probably would not stay at the WJ hotel again. I used the hotel's first floor bathroom before I left for the airport (5 hours after checking out), and it was disgusting. I've used airport bathrooms that were cleaner. How is it that this is allowed to get this way? Hotel recommended a car service after my scheduled ride canceled. When I told them that I was worried about the cost, I was told by the valet that it would be $58, including tolls and tip. I assumed that this was a bit low (that's the yellow cab), so I expected about $70. Turns out, upon arrival to the airport, that it was $95. It would have been cheaper to take a taxi as originally planned, rather than take take the valet at his word. But I trusted him, since he was recommending the service on behalf of the hotel. A fitting end to a rather mediocre five days at the WJ Hotel. I'm sad...I would have liked to have a "go to" hotel in NYC. PS: Four days later after being told that housekeeping would "reach out" to me. I'm still waiting. Good thing I'm not holding my breath!
