To get a flavour of the city beyond the usual tourist traps I’d highly recommend the Walking Harlem Gospel Tour. The host had a deep knowledge of the place music & worship had to the African Americans who were an integral, though often overlooked, part of New York’s transformation into one of the great cities of the world. Passing by the homes of Billie Holiday and Scott Joplin as well as a stop at one of the world’s most famous theatres, The Apollo, and finishing with a church service that we were welcomed most generously into, this tour will remain one of the highlights of my visit. Rain (as it did on my visit) or shine, it is a fantastic walk.
